With all the interest in spearfishing lately and the number of snorkelers and spearos filling spots on the Shallow and Sheltered dive trips, we thought we would try a spearo only trip aboard the Mantra. Initially set for 17 April we had 11 keen spearos on board. Unfortunately, the weather intervened causing us to postponed to the following Saturday. Being both a Saturday and a long weekend a few people dropped out but we picked up a few more and ended up with 8 booked.
Casting off at 8:15 we headed out for Motiti. There was a bit of a swell rolling in from the North East so the best spot seemed to be around Home Bay. The water was nice and clear giving around 8-10 metres viz and being in the shelter of the island the surface was smooth and glassy. We spent 4 hours at the first spot where Kahawai, kingfish, snapper and butterfish were seen. Even a John Dory was spotted scuttling away.
After a spot of lunch, we poked our nose around the north end, just to confirm the swell was still busting itself against the shore. Another sheltered spot was found and everybody jumped in for another couple of hours.
We headed off home happy after a great day out and a couple of cold ones to quench a well-earned thirst.
Keep your eye out for more spearo trips or give me a call to ensure I let you know when we are off again. Winter won’t stop these good keen spearos.
